ATROPINE; HYOSCYAMINE; PHENOBARBITAL; SCOPOLAMINE (Donnatal®) is used to treat different bowel problems including irritable bowel syndrome. It may also help in treating an intestinal ulcer (duodenal ulcer). Generic atropine; hyoscyamine; phenobarbital; scopolamine tablets are available. Generic capsules or extended-release tablets are not available.
What should my health care professional know before I take atropine; hyoscyamine; phenobarbital; scopolamine?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

closed-angle glaucoma

diarrhea

difficulty passing urine

heart disease, or previous heart attack

hiatal hernia (also known as esophogeal reflux or GERD)

How should I take this medicine?
Take this drug by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the capsules or tablets whole with a drink of water 30 to 60 minutes before food. If you are taking the Donnatal Extentabs® or other extended-release dosage form, swallow the tablets whole; do not crush, cut, or chew them. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.
Elderly patients over age 65 years may have a stronger reaction to this medicine and may need smaller doses.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
What if I miss a dose?
If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What should I watch for while taking atropine; hyoscyamine; phenobarbital; scopolamine?
This medication can stop birth control pills (oral contraceptives) from working properly. Use another method of birth control while you are taking this medication.
If you are going to have surgery, tell your prescriber or health care professional that you are taking this medication.
You may get dizzy or have blurred vision. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how this medication affects you. To reduce the risk of dizzy or fainting spells, do not sit or stand up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. Alcohol can make you more dizzy, avoid alcoholic drinks.
Stay out of bright light and wear sunglasses if this medication makes your eyes more sensitive to light.
Your mouth may get dry. Chewing sugarless gum or sucking hard candy, and drinking plenty of water will help.
This medication may cause dry eyes and blurred vision. If you wear contact lenses, you may feel some discomfort. Lubricating drops may help. See your ophthalmologist if the problem does not go away or is severe.
Avoid extreme heat (e.g., hot tubs, saunas). This medication can cause you to sweat less than normal. Your body temperature could increase to dangerous levels, which may lead to heat stroke.

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
