PHENYLEPHRINE (Neo-Synephrine®) acts as a decongestant for the eyes. It treats several different eye problems. Phenylephrine can make the pupils (centers of the eyes) larger before eye examination or surgery. Generic phenylephrine eye solution is available.

What should my health care professional know before I use phenylephrine?

They need to know if you have any of the following conditions:

  • head injury or disease

  • heart disease

  • glaucoma

  • high blood pressure

  • over active thyroid

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to phenylephrine, sulfites, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Phenylephrine eye solution is only for use in the eye. Do not take by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Wash hands before and after use. With your middle finger, apply pressure to the inside corner of your eye for 1 to 2 minutes. Tilt your head back and pull your lower eyelid down to form a pouch. Drop the solution into the pouch. Do not blink for 30 seconds. Close your eye gently for 1 to 2 minutes until the solution is completely absorbed. Try not to touch the tip of the dropper to your eye, fingertips, or other surface. Do not use your medicine more often than directed.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with phenylephrine?

  • atropine

  • bromocriptine

  • linezolid

  • maprotiline

  • medicines for mental depression

  • medicines for migraine

  • medicine for high blood pressure

  • oxytocin

  • vasopressin

  • water pills

Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. What should I watch for while taking phenylephrine?

Check with your prescriber or health care professional if your condition has not improved within 1 week, or if it gets worse. Do not use phenylephrine for more than 3 days without your prescriber's advice.

Notify your prescriber or health care professional at once if you get a severe eye pain, headache, vision changes, floating spots, eye redness, or pain with exposure to light. These may be signs of serious side effects.

You may get blurred vision; do not drive, use machinery or do anything that needs clear vision until you know how phenylephrine affects you.

Phenylephrine eye drops (the 2.5% and 10% strength) will make your pupils (centers of your eyes) large. This can make your eyes sensitive to light. Wear sunglasses and avoid bright sun or other bright lights.

What side effects may I notice from using phenylephrine?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • dizziness, or fainting spells

  • difficulty breathing

  • eye pain, vision changes, floating spots before the eyes

  • irregular heartbeat, palpitations, or chest pain

  • increased sweating

  • pale skin

  • tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands or feet

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • blurred vision, or stinging in the eyes

  • confusion, nervousness

  • headache

  • nausea, vomiting

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F); do not freeze. Protect from light. Do not use if solution is brown or contains a precipitate. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

How should I use this medicine?

Phenylephrine nose drops, spray or jelly are only for use in the nose. Do not take by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Blow your nose gently. If you are using nasal drops, lie down on a bed and hang your head over the side or tilt your head back while sitting or standing. Place the prescribed number of drops into each nostril. Keep your head tilted back for several minutes. Rinse the dropper with hot water and dry. If you are using a nasal spray, keep your head in the upright position and spray into each nostril. Do not use the container for more than one person. If you are using the nasal jelly, place a little jelly in each nostril, and sniff well back into the nose. Blow your nose well about 3 to 5 minutes after using phenylephrine. Do not use more often than directed.

If you get a slight stinging sensation in the nose after using phenylephrine it is of no cause for concern. The effect should go away after a few applications.

If you get any of the possible serious side effects, check with your prescriber or health care professional. You may be using too much phenylephrine.

  • dizziness, or fainting spells

  • burning, stinging, dryness, or local irritation inside your nose

What should my health care professional know before I receive Phenylephrine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • blood vessel disease

  • diabetes

  • difficulty urinating (urinary retention)

  • glaucoma

  • heart disease or heart rhythm problems

  • high blood pressure

  • over active thyroid

  • phenylketonuria

  • prostate trouble

  • history of stroke

  • an unusual reaction to phenylephrine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding

How should this medicine be used?

Place one strip on your tongue and allow it to dissolve completely. Follow the directions on the label. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

Patients over 60 years old may have a stronger reaction to this medicine and need smaller doses.
