Depression in the Young

Children can become depressed, but they may not be able to express themselves in a way that would make it clear they are depressed, according to the American Psychological Association. Here are some important behaviors that may signal depression in children:

  • A child whose grades decline suddenly

  • A child who no longer enjoys activities he or she took pleasure in

  • A child who talks of death or suicide

  • A child who becomes fearful or anxious

  • A child who becomes antisocial or aggressive

  • A child who begins using alcohol or illegal drugs

  • A child who complains of aches in arms, legs or stomach with no apparent cause
